Most local businesses guess at keywords. They optimize for “best plumber Karachi” because it sounds right, while real customers in their city search “nal nal repair near me” or “leakage wala mistri”. The gap between what you think people search and what they actually type is where most local SEO campaigns quietly fail. Local keyword research is the process of discovering the exact words and phrases your own city’s customers use on Google — and it starts with listening, not tools.
Before opening any keyword tool, gather the words your customers already use. Check your WhatsApp chats, call logs and Google reviews: the phrases customers repeat there are usually the phrases they typed into Google first. A salon in Tando Adam might hear “hair straightening price” ten times a week, while its website targets “keratin treatment Sindh” — a term nobody in the city uses. Ask your front-desk staff what callers ask for, read your competitors’ reviews for service descriptions, and write down every variant. This raw list of real customer language becomes the seed list for everything that follows, and it is free.
Type one of your seed phrases into Google with your city name — for example “plumber in Hyderabad” — and stop before hitting enter. The autocomplete suggestions are real searches people in your region make, ranked by popularity. Scroll to the bottom for the “Related searches” block, and note every “People also ask” question — each one is a ready-made FAQ for your site. Now repeat with variations: swap the city name, drop it, add “near me”, “best”, “cheap”, “price”, “near”. A single seed like “AC repair” can surface “AC repair near me open now”, “AC gas refill price Karachi” and “window AC service Lahore” — each a separate page or section opportunity.
Open Google Maps and search your main service. The business names ranking in the Map Pack tell you which keywords Google rewards: note the categories they use and the words in their names. Then read their reviews — customers describe services in plain words (“he fixed our geyser in one visit”, “best biryani near station”) that translate directly into long-tail keywords. Also watch the search terms Maps suggests as you type; Maps autocomplete reflects location-based intent and often differs from regular Google search. If a competitor with fewer reviews outranks you, their keyword and category choices are usually the reason — understanding those ranking factors will show you exactly what to investigate.
Qualitative research tells you what to target; free tools tell you how much demand exists. Google Search Console (if your site is verified) shows the exact queries your pages already get impressions for — including ones you never targeted, which are pure opportunity. Google Keyword Planner, inside a free Google Ads account, gives search-volume ranges for your city and region. Google Trends lets you compare “beauty parlour” vs “salon” vs “makeup artist” in your province over time, so you pick the term with rising demand. And the free version of tools like Ubersuggest or Keyword Surfer shows rough volume and competition right inside search results. You do not need a paid subscription to build a solid local keyword list.
Search your top 5 target phrases and open the top-ranking local competitors. Their page titles, headings and FAQ sections are keyword research someone else already paid for — note which phrases repeat across multiple competitors, because consensus usually means those terms convert. Check their Google Business Profile categories and services list, and scan their site for location pages (“plumber in Gulshan”, “plumber in DHA”) — each one reveals a neighborhood keyword worth considering. Do not copy their content; instead, map the gaps: the questions they ignore, the areas they do not serve, the services they bury in a list. Those gaps are your fastest wins.
A raw list of 200 phrases is useless until filtered. Score each keyword on three things. First, intent: “emergency electrician near me” signals someone ready to call, while “how to fix a switch” signals a DIYer who will never hire you — prioritize buyer intent. Second, volume: even rough volume data separates the phrases with hundreds of monthly searches from the ones nobody types. Third, difficulty: a brand-new site should target specific long-tails (“car denting painting in Faisalabad”) before chasing “best workshop Pakistan”. Keep a shortlist of 20–40 keywords: a handful of money pages, a set of service-area pages, and the rest as blog topics that feed the money pages through internal links.
Research only pays off when each keyword gets a home. Map every shortlisted keyword to exactly one page: one service page per core service, one page per city or area you serve, and one blog article per question-style keyword. Put the primary keyword in the title, URL, H1 and first paragraph, then support it with the related phrases you discovered — the “People also ask” questions become your FAQs. Update the list quarterly: cities change, new neighborhoods appear, and seasonal terms (“AC service” before summer, “wedding hall” before wedding season) deserve fresh content. If this sounds like a lot of manual work, a free SEO audit can show you which local keywords your site already ranks for — and which ones your competitors are quietly taking from you. Done right, local keyword research turns guessing into a content calendar, and a content calendar into calls.
