The short answer: walk away from any agency that guarantees #1 Google rankings, refuses to show real client results with numbers, hides behind vague deliverables, demands long lock-in contracts upfront, or keeps your ad accounts and data in their name. These are the patterns behind nearly every “agency scammed us” story Pakistani business owners tell — and they’re easy to spot once you know them.
Consider this your pre-hiring inspection checklist.
No one can guarantee rankings — not even Google’s own partners. Rankings depend on competition, algorithm changes, and your website’s starting point. Agencies making this promise either plan to target worthless keywords nobody searches (“best affordable quality digital services provider Tando Adam”) so they can technically “deliver,” or they’re simply lying. Honest agencies give ranges and timelines based on experience: “top-3 map pack in 4–6 months for these keywords, based on similar clients.”
“We’ve worked with 200+ clients” means nothing without proof. Demand: the client’s starting point, what was done, and measured outcomes (traffic growth, leads per month, ROAS) over a stated timeframe. Vague testimonials (“great service, highly recommended!”) without names or numbers are decoration. If an agency can’t show three detailed case studies, they either have no results or no permission — both are problems. Bonus check: call one reference.
“Complete digital marketing package — Rs. 50,000/month” tells you nothing. What exactly arrives each month? How many posts, articles, ad campaigns, reports? Legitimate agencies itemize: “8 social posts, 2 blog articles, 1 ad campaign build + weekly optimization, monthly SEO report.” Vagueness isn’t just sloppy — it’s how agencies get paid for doing very little while staying technically within the agreement.
This is the big one. If your Google Ads account, Facebook Business Manager, Analytics, or even your website hosting is registered under the agency’s email, you don’t own your marketing — they do. Leaving becomes hostage negotiation: agencies have been known to hold ad accounts (with all their historical data) ransom. Non-negotiable rule: every account is created in your name, with the agency added as a user/manager. Get this in writing before work starts.
Twelve-month contracts before any work is delivered protect the agency, not you. Confident agencies offer 3-month initial terms — enough to show real signal — then continue on performance. Be especially wary of large upfront payments (beyond a normal 30–50% project deposit) paired with no performance clauses. If they’re sure they’ll deliver, they shouldn’t need to lock the exit.
Ask to see a sample monthly report before signing. If it’s pages of impressions, reach, and follower counts with no mention of leads, cost per lead, or revenue impact, you’re buying theater. Also watch for: reports that never mention underperforming campaigns, no month-over-month comparisons, and jargon designed to confuse rather than clarify. You should understand every number in your report.
Ask who specifically works on your account and what their experience is. A common Pakistani market pattern: the impressive founder pitches, then a fresh graduate juggling 30 accounts executes — badly. There’s nothing wrong with junior staff, but they need senior supervision and reasonable workloads. “Who will I talk to weekly, and how many other clients do they handle?” is a fair question. Evasive answers tell you plenty.
“We do SEO, ads, social, web, video, branding, PR — everything, cheapest in Pakistan!” Agencies claiming to be the best at everything are usually mediocre at all of it. Similarly, an agency that trashes all competitors instead of explaining its own process is selling insecurity. Professionals acknowledge trade-offs and tell you what they don’t do.
The most underrated red flag: an agency that pitches before understanding. If the first meeting is a slideshow of their services rather than questions about your customers, margins, and goals, they’ll execute generic tactics on your budget. Great agencies interrogate you — sometimes uncomfortably — because strategy comes from understanding, not templates.
Show me three case studies with numbers; who exactly works on my account; what are the monthly deliverables; what does the sample report look like; are all accounts in my name; what’s the initial contract term and exit process. Their comfort with these questions is itself the test.
Not always — a focused Rs. 40,000/month single-channel package from a small team can be legitimate. But “full-service everything” under Rs. 30,000/month mathematically cannot include real strategy, senior time, and proper execution. Price that’s too good to be true is.
Secure your assets first: get admin access to every account, download all reports and creative files, then exit per your contract terms. Document everything in writing. Then hire properly using this checklist.
Hiring shouldn’t feel like gambling. MSJ Digital puts everything on the table upfront — itemized deliverables, sample reports, accounts in your name, and honest timelines. Judge us against this checklist; we’re comfortable with that.
